TAHITI
Papeete, French Polynesia’s capital city,
bustles with activity. Don’t miss visiting Le Marché, the colorful public
market. It’s a great place to pick up several versatile pareos, the
brilliantly painted Polynesian sarongs that serve as everything from beach
cover-ups to evening wear. Other popular items are woven hats, mats, grass
skirts and other Tahitian handicrafts.
More crafts beckon at the Artisans Village
where you can find an assortment of handmade quilts, cloth, woven bags and wall
hangings.
If you have the time, visit the Papeete
waterfront. Stop for a meal at Les Roulettes, the charming lunch wagons that
line up along the waterfront at dusk. Choose from Italian, Chinese, French and
other cuisines. You’ll be seated alongside the wagons at fold-out dining
counters; some are even spread with elegant white tablecloths.
Circle Island Tour
Take in all of Tahiti’s "must
sees," from the Arahoho blow-hole to Faaruumai waterfalls, the Gauguin

MOOREA
Much of the adventure on Moorea lies in discovering new vantage points from
which to admire its glorious mountain-surrounded bays – Cook’s and Opunohu.
The most acclaimed views beckon at Belvedere Lookout, where the mountains part

Poke around Moorea at your own pace. Set out early one morning for a hike
along part of the 37-mile road that skirts the island’s edge. When the sun
gets too hot, you can hop aboard the island bus.
Be sure to stop at one of the general stores along the way, if only to marvel
at the creative clutter – you’ll find everything from work shirts, buttons
and thread, to breadfruit, fresh fish and Chinese vegetables, to chicken feed
and fragrant ginger blossoms, plus an array of pareus fluttering from the
rafters.
Circle Island Tour
Discover Moorea’s volcanic peaks,

RAIATEA and TAHAA
Ancient cultural, religious and royal heart
of Polynesia, Raiatea was, according to legend, the birthplace of the gods. From
here the great canoes set out for Hawaii and New Zealand, entire tribes sailing
off to colonize new shores. Long ago the people called the island Havai’I
("the homeland") and believed it was the place where spirits live on
after death. And it is only here, on the slopes of sacred Mount Temehani, that
one can glimpse the rare tiare apetahi, a flower found nowhere else on earth.
Tahaa is also know as Vanilla Island, so named
for its numerous plantations of this fragrant plant, whose sweet aroma lingers
in the air, seeping into every nook and cranny of the island. While fishing and
farming are its main livelihoods, what seduces the visitors are its pretty
beaches, coral gardens, and the sandy motu which pepper the lagoon it shares
with Raiatea.
